What Is Truth?

The 10th promise of Debtors Anonymous says that we will no longer fear the truth; we will move from hiding in denial to living in reality.

What Is Truth?

Truth? The truth is I’m OK
My tummy is full
The heat is on and a hot bath awaits
But what if things aren’t as they appear?
Blasphemy! I’m OK

What if the mail hasn’t been open in months?
What if the credit cards are maxed?
What if I’m broke the day I’m paid?
What if the tummy, the heat, the bath is a lie?
What if I’m not OK?

So much fear to look at reality
Rather live in denial
It’s a truth I can live with
No need to bury my head
The illusion keeps me content

Over time denial is harder to obtain
Reality won’t let go
It won’t let me sleep
The phone is ringing
Collectors at the door

With a deep breath and full of fear
Step foot into a future based on reality
A reality that says I’m not OK
I’m broke and scared
And I want security

I want I real home
I want a real life
Not based on shows or illusions
Rather based on comfort and freedom
Starting with freedom from debt

Finding The Simple Life

The Ninth Promise of Debtors Anonymous states that we will find acceptance and gratitude and it will replace regret, self pity and longing.

Finding the Simple Life

A boring life… a simple life
no need for extravagant possessions
add no value to one’s worth
just a thing that will lead to regrets

oh poor poor me
no money for a car
can get it with credit
though it is no longer an option

oh poor poor me
no special vacations… no holidays abroad
realizing there is no debt
yet at times it isn’t much of a reward

oh thank you… thank you
this is simple life is a good one
sleep soundly having no debt
stress free home with no bills

thank you… thank you
for the strength not to keep up
neighbours with new cars and new debt
riding the bus… reading the paper

accepting this new life
simple and stress free
no longer afraid of phones
wondering… how to pay

grateful to accept responsibility
to stretch money… to make it last
to set goals… for a healthy future
thank God for this freedom

Owning Oneself

The 8th Promise of Debtors Anonymous states that we will cease to compare ourselves to others;
jealousy and envy will fade.

Owning Oneself

You own what?
Didn’t ask… yet wondered
how did they afford that?
If they can get it…
I can get better
I can get bigger and newer
And most of all more expensive

Still better than you
I’ll have the things to prove it
Stereos, cars, laptops, and notebooks
Yours? New! Mine? Superior!
I’ll give the illusion that everything bought
is owned and is mine
No one will know what I own
is actually owning me

I don’t own that new car… it owns me
monthly payments, insurance and service
working more hours to pay the bill
I don’t own the latest phone or notebook… it owns me
monthly payments have stolen the joy of it all
deep in debt… reality hits
it doesn’t matter what is owned… what matters is what is owed

Now I own myself
With no competition there is no envy
Jealously is a thing of the past
Having no debt is freeing
No longer living a life of stress
No longer paranoid of phone calls or letters
Spiritually awakened to simplicity

It Is Enough

The 7th Promise of Debtors Anonymous says that we will recognize that there is enough; our resources will be generous and we will share them with others and with DA.

It Is Enough

A full tummy… so nice
energy to get through the day
strength to carry on
it is enough

Security with employment
no darkness with electricity
not cold due to heat
it is enough

Thankful for gifts
ordinary… mundane
nothing spectacular… yet
it is enough

Deep in the hole
bankruptcy a shameful option
instead a new budget
it is enough

Gracious and thankful
nightmares now memories
tears now smiles
it is enough

It worked… out of debt
finally able to give and not take
sharing and helping others
thank you Lord… for giving me enough

Letting Go of the Faith of Fear

The Sixth Promise of Debtors Anonymous states that Isolation will give way to fellowship; faith will replace fear.

Letting Go Of The Faith Of Fear

No faith in a future
when life is dead
no faith in a future
without money to cure all ills

no fear with no money
credit cards bring new life
no fear with no money
live for today

no faith and no fear
living in isolation
hiding in the darkness
praying to be alone

won’t answer the phone
won’t open the mail
won’t answer the door
won’t be a part of life

to live without credit
finding faith in oneself
new fears of the unknown
a new life set to begin

confidence built with every payment
worth built with every bill paid
to walk away from isolation
to be free from debt paranoia

free to answer the phone
faith to open the mail
secure enough to open the door
a new life being debt free

I Am Enough

The Fifth Promise of Debtors Anonymous states that we will realize that we are enough; we will value ourselves and our contributions.

I Am Enough

I am enough
I am myself
I am free
free from material wealth
free from showmanship
free from debt

I am enough
I am myself
I am enjoying life
thankful for employment
thankful for a home
thankful for a partner

I am enough
I am myself
I am able to see
to see the sunrise and set
to see a lovers smile
to see a friends victory

I am enough
I am myself
I am able to feel
feeling the love from a cat
feeling accepted
feeling at peace

I… am… enough…
I… am… myself…
I… am… contributing…
contributing to life
contributing to others
contributing to God

Had Nothing

The Fourth Promise of Debtors Anonymous says that we will begin to live a prosperous life, unencumbered by fear, worry, resentment or debt.

Had Nothing

Had no fear… had nothing
no roof… no clothes… no food
nothing …
maybe no fear but tons of worry

starving… shaking… withdrawals
no future plans… please…
let me survive the day
hated everyone… just because they had money

please give me a penny
please give me a sandwich
please don’t spit on me
please don’t curse me

oh the dream of a warm meal
followed by a warm bath
with clean warm clothes
and a nice cozy bed

a prosperous life
possibly not financially sound
rather comfortable with no fear
no debt… no worries

free from comparisons of others
free from resentments
no longer looking for handouts
rather closing hands in a prayer of thanks

I Am Not For Show

The Third Promise of Debtors Anonymous says that We will live within our means, yet our means will not define us.

I Am Not For Show

A hundred dollar a night hotel
A thirty dollar a night hotel
which is the best?
People would be impressed with $100
yet… it’s just for a sleep
thirty dollars paid with cash
hundred dollars paid with credit

never defined by credit… certainly not for show
not worried what others think
rather sleep with less stress
a little money in pocket
at the end of the day
we’re all the same
head on pillow… sleeping soundly

it’s not what is owned
rather… its what’s owed
tv that’s paid for
not a surround sound with a monthly bill
a 1990 car parked out front
not a 2017 porsche that takes half a paycheck
head on pillow… sleeping soundly

keep your possessions and your wealth
a little money in hand
some stashed for a rainy day
a fine night out eating lobster
replaced with chicken parmesan
champagne replaced with coke
head on pillow… sleeping soundly

no debt… free to be
no worries… no stress
what a wonderful life
not defined by what others have
nor defined by show
not worried about wants… just needs
head on pillow… sleeping soundly

No Longer Filled With Fear

The second promise of Debtors Anonymous states that clarity will replace vagueness. Confidence and intuition will replace confusion and chaos. We will live engaged lives, make decisions that best meet our needs, and become the people we were meant to be.

No longer filled with fear

Had one… needed ten
had two… needed ten
had three… needed ten
shit, back to two… need ten
never have enough
can’t save… need to spend

nothing of value to sell
except… except… no… can’t
what to do… no plan
pure chaos… just insane
borrow money to pay bills
a decision with no goal

bite the bullet… quit the spending
quit the thoughts of selling one’s soul
park the car and walk
brown bags replace two martini lunches
rabbit ears replace cable tv
cell phone replaced with a trac phone

it’s nothing more than short term pain
for a future with long term gains
no more nasty phone calls or threatening mail
debt replaced with savings
holidays no longer wasted in front of the tv
rather soaking up the sun by the sea

no longer begging for more time
no longer pleading for more money
no longer sleepless nights
no longer days filled with fear
today the sun will shine
financially all is fine

Tears of Failure... Tears of Success

The first promise of debtors anonymous states that where we once felt despair, we will experience a new found hope.

Tears of Failure… Tears of Success

there is no end in sight
a life of debt I don’t want to fight
no loans available for me
a future I can not see

can’t answer the phone
hide in the dark… all alone
no longer open the mail
this life I have failed

no credit left… no cash in hand
soon be homeless… living off the land
everyday full of fear… just want to cry
at times… wish God would let me die

wasn’t long ago I lived that life of fear
I really thought it would be a lifelong career
credit was maxed then came the crash
I had to learn to live strictly with cash

little goals made and a budget was set
in time… these little goals were met
this new life offered me some pride
no longer did I run and hide

living a life of being debt free
the future is bright… just look and see
plans to travel and do lots more
cash in hand… off to the store

no longer an illusion or a fantasy
yes… I can live debt free
to have control of money in hand
instead of it slipping through it like sand

working for money is no way to be free
money working for me is the goal to see
