The Beauty Of What We Were

I wrote this in 2005 based on a lecture given by Deepak Chopra about ten years ago

The Beauty Of What We Were

The beauty of what we were,
before we were born,
will never die.

Dreams created eons ago,
on playgrounds and backyards.
Lil' boys and girls,
playing house,
raising their children -
Ken and Barbie.

The beauty of what we were,
before we were born,
will never die.

From childhood innocence,
came teenage passion.
Back seats of cars,
under trees in the park.
Thought we were safe,
thought we were protected.
For some, dreams became...
a lifelong commitment.

The beauty of what we were,
before we were born,
will never die.

Teenage passion to maturity,
conceived in love.
A life created,
games played as children,
still fun, now with responsibility.
Mom and Dad, husband and wife,
became role models,
for a new set of players.

The beauty of what we were,
before we were born,
will never die.

We became an audience,
watching games,
we knew to well.
Revised, refined, revisited.
What was once fun,
now filled with concern
and stress...

The beauty of what we were,
before we were born,
will never die.

From childhood, we became parents.
We dreamed of children,
for our children.
Grandma and Grandpa came alive,
reliving innocence and passion,
maturity and responsibility.

And we realized,
the beauty of what we were,
before we were born,
will never die...

Well Dave, sometimes I wonder about what you just poemed here in great charm, to be or not to be? My early years were, "what am I doing in this crazy place?" My older years are, "ok it's a crazy place at times but I'm going to dress it up." G

How well you describe the essence of life and it's eternal cycle. And "we go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game", as Joni Mitchell put it...
