Our Child

I have had the sad fortune of knowing three families who have lost their children... two of them were teenagers... the other still very young at 25.  This was a tribute poem I wrote for them in honor and memory of their children.

another Christmas,
where… our celebration
is filled with heavy hearts
we’ll visit your grave
and remember… our time together

you were our child
in this life
you’ll be our child
for all eternity

we’ll never understand
the meaning of it all
but we know that…
you are missed

we still hear stories
of your life
from friends we hardly knew
and we share a smile
and some tears

after Christmas
we’ll give thanks
to the short life
we shared with you

you were our child
